Berkeley Office of Emergency Services - Light Search & Rescue

I just took the Light Search and Rescue class from Berkeley's Department of Emergency Services.

We learned how to organize into groups, identify hazards, safely search homes, and use the right tools to lift heavy objects.

The classes are superbly organized and lead... and they're free for Berkeley Residents. Classes are held at the Fire Department Training Center at 997 Cedar Street, Berkeley, CA 94710 in West Berkeley.

For questions email oes@ci.berkeley.ca.us or call 510-981-5605.

Adventures in Berkeley & Emeryville

The Tsui House asa "Fish House" at 2747 Mathews Street in Berkeley.. just west of San Pablo Park. Yes it really is there.. and people live in it! Eugene Tsui, the architect designed it for his parents.

Speeders? In Berkeley?

How a quiet street is able to stay quiet.

I LOVE the iPhone 2.0 Software... but you probably won't be seeing me on this line. I went to the Emeryville Apple Store on Bay Street to take a free class on iMovie and iDVD.

Ode to the Garden at 1443 Josephine Street

It is with much sadness that I leave this small but lovely garden. I have tried to create a garden packed with flowers that delights the passerby as well as my family. The flowers invite butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds, and these pollinators animate the plants with their activity. I have included a diagram of the plants that I have planted and identified in the garden and also a spreadsheet with the names and their locations. We have also included a diagram of the automatic watering system. The watering system takes care of almost all the watering needs of the garden except in very warm weather, which is rare in Berkeley.

More information of this wonderful home and magical garden at http://1443josephine.com

Details and diagrams of the garden’s landscaping & automatic irrigation system are included!

Recently refinished floors, custom verdigris copper glaze finishes by renowned artist Cher Cultrona in living/dining rooms. Great storage below

Happy Birthday To Us... Ira's Ode to the 4th of July!

The Fourth Of July is one of those holidays, like Thanksgiving, that everyone can celebrate.

I'm about to head out to some parades... and thought I'd post one of my favorite photos from my recent trip to NYC... with that beautiful, gorgeous, red white and blue flag... and the Chrysler Building.

On my first trip to Prague in 1972, I passed machine gun guards, tight security, undercover police, and and a city clearly under Soviet domination.

I loved Prague, and was delighted to return with Carol.

But I can tell you that one of the most beautiful things I saw was our flag flying over the United States Embassy.

I'm listening to Rhapsody In Blue, from the Manhattan Soundtrack, as I write this.. and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes (perhaps a result of being born in Manhattan)

So.. enjoy this glorious holiday... and if you're interested in seeing more of my NYC Deco Photos.. just click on my New York City Deco Photos link!
